Teeth that succumb to decay, but cannot be filled, can be reconstructed with a so-called dental crown. If the tooth is severely damaged, it can be constructed with the help of a dental post and then the crown will be placed on it. If you are missing one or more teeth, a dental bridge will close the gap after the abutment teeth are prepared and the dental bridge is cemented onto them. Crowns and bridges can be supported both by natural teeth or dental implants. A wide variety of crowns are available to transform decayed teeth into a beautiful smile and to re-establish the chewing function. Which Countries Do Most Patients Come from?
Our dental clinics are located in Mosonmagyaróvár, Hungary, not far from the Austrian border. Patients mainly come from the German-speaking region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) and from other Western European countries. When is a Dental Crown Needed? Dental Crown Restorations in Hungary.
If the tooth structure of the natural tooth crown is destroyed for the greater part and can no longer be restored with a dental filling or an Inlay due to severe destruction, a crown is needed to preserve the given tooth. The crown is placed over the prepared tooth (root). It acts like a protective cover (jacket) that restores the form and stability of the tooth.
What Materials Are Used for the Production of Crowns and Bridges in Hungary?
As with virtually any restorative treatment, our patients have several options to choose from in Hungary that differ from in material and processing technology. Which dental crowns are cemented depends on the purpose they are designed to or based on the patient's request.
In principle, only substances that are authorized by the Medical Devices Act may be processed and used in the mouth. Both aesthetic and financial aspects determine the type of quality material used.
It is important to know that neither of the affordable constructions of base metal alloys harm the body. However, if there is a suspicion of an allergy, an allergy test with a specialist (allergist or dermatologist) should be performed before receiving the dentures.
- Metal-free materials (E.g. with a zirconia crown)
Such materials have been used increasingly lately to replace visible metal edges of ceramic-fused-to-metal crowns. These crowns look natural and are hardly recognizable as crowns. They are mostly made of zirconia (porcelain).
- Mixed materials (E.g. ceramic-fused-to-metal, ceramic-fused-to-titanium or ceramic-fused-to-gold crowns)
Metal and ceramic are used as materials: the latter is bonded firmly on the metal framework in a special procedure. The colour of ceramic is very similar to natural tooth structure. Since the crowns are not transparent due to their metal core, at a certain lighting angle they can seem a little darker than natural teeth.
How Are Dental Crowns (or Dental Bridges) Made in Hungary?
The first step of every dental treatment is a professional oral hygiene treatment, including teeth and periodontal pocket cleaning and Airflow treatment respectively. Afterwards a panoramic X-ray is taken and a personal check-up is conducted. Based on the collected information, the diagnosis can be established and the treatment started on the same day if the patient wishes so. The tooth receiving the crown is prepared under local anaesthesia. If there is tooth decay, it is removed. The resulting defective spot is sealed with a filling. This serves to stabilize the tooth and makes sure that the dental crown has an improved hold on the prepared (filed) tooth stump.
In order to obtain an accurate impression of the prepared tooth, the gums must slightly be pushed back. The more precise the impression and the resulting working model, the better the prepared crown fits the tooth stump. An additional impression of the opposing jaw may be needed by the dental technician in order to be able to determine the correct occlusal height of the crown.
Until the insertion of the actual dental crown or bridge, the prepared teeth must be protected against external influences. A temporary restoration is used for this purpose. Without the temporary tooth cap, the stump would be so sensitive that only breathing in would lead to severe pain. The "transitional crown" supports bite and protects against irritation of the tooth nerve. Most temporary restorations are made of plastic (composite).
During the second appointment, the almost finished crown is tried on the prepared tooth. The patient decides whether the intervention is to take place under local anaesthesia. Sometimes it occurs that in case of front teeth colour and/or shape modifications should be made. In this case a further appointment is necessary.
The dentist checks the following factors:
- the edge of the crown,
- contact with the opposing jaw,
- contact with adjacent teeth, and
- optical fit in the row of teeth.
When all the criteria is met, the crown is cemented firmly on the tooth stump.
The preparation of a dental crown usually takes four to five days in Hungary.
How long do dental crowns last?
On average, a dental crown lasts between 10-15 years in case of a thorough oral hygiene. Nevertheless, several factors can shorten the life of a crown.
These include:
- lack of or improper oral hygiene,
- periodontitis, when gums recede,
- previous root canal treatment of the tooth, or
- teeth grinding (bruxism).
What Problems Could Develop With a Dental Crown?
Some problems may arise while getting accustomed to the crown, but they are not common. Frequently mentioned problems are:
- foreign body sensation,
- sensitive teeth,
- feeling tightness,
- modified chewing feeling,
- crown feels too high, and/or
- crown hurts when biting and the patient realizes that the tooth slightly moves.
It is harmless if you experience slight tightness, a modified chewing feeling, foreign body sensation or slight sensitivity in the first couple of days. However, in case the problems will not disappear in the next few days, the patient should definitely consult our clinic.
After the preparation of dental prostheses, the patient has a warranty period of three years.
What Is a Dental Bridge?
A fixed dental bridge is considered a biologically valuable solution to restore again the continuity of the arch form after tooth loss. A dental bridge consists of crowns for the neighbouring abutment teeth and the intermediate members (pontics) that replace the missing teeth. The bridges, as well as the crowns, can be made of several different materials. When the pre-treatment is finished, the bridge is manufactured in the dental laboratory. Meanwhile, the tooth gap is closed with a provisional (temporary) dental bridge during this period. Once the final dental bridge is fabricated, it must fit in perfectly because it is permanently cemented only if it fits symptom-free.
